Taxes are not a positive aspect of life but they are necessary. In Sociolotron taxes are needed for districts to provide protection with NPC guards, pay PC guards and also reimburse PC guards for expenses for criminal investigation. Taxes come from the characters who own houses in a district.
They are withdrawn from a character's account every day at restart. How taxes are calculated is described in the judge section because it is the judge who sets the taxes for his district. The taxes for houses are usually moderate while taxes for business locations can be quite high and force the owner of the business to make profit.
If a character does not have enough money to pay his taxes during the daily maintenance phase, the house is closed for the rest of the day, nobody can enter the house, but the house and all its object inside are left untouched. Once you can pay your taxes again, the house reopens. Outstanding taxes are not accumulated, so all you have to day is be able to pay taxes for one day to have your house opened again.
Whenever you login, look at the startup message. It contains the taxes your character paid since he last logged in.
