There is one prosecutor per district and his main task is to prepare criminal cases for the judge. In order to become prosecutor, a character must have an oratory of 2 but no other conditions are required. The prosecutor accesses his dialog from a public terminal on the Justice Tab. The prosecutor dialog looks like this:

The top list contains the crime cases that have been filed with the prosecutor because somebody thinks that he has put enough evidence in the file to convict a character. When a character sends his crime file to the prosecutor he does this because he things that he has enough evidence to convict a character. He gives up his file as it goes to the prosecutor's office but the physical file itself is not passed on, it is destroyed. the prosecutor however can always create a new copy. When another character sends his file of the same crime, the clues in that file are merged with the one already in the prosecutor's office, thus contributing to the already existing file, not creating a new file. The prosecutor can always create new copies of a crime file and they can be destroyed without affecting the master file that is safe with the prosecutor's office. When the prosecutor changes, the files are safe with his office and are available to the next prosecutor, since they are not associated with the person holding the office but rather with the office.
The prosecutor however can destroy a crimefile permanently by clicking the respective button in the dialog. When he does so, the master copy with the office is destroyed including all the clues in it. There may still be other copies out there and they may be filed with the prosecutors office later and thus create a new master file. there is a danger when doing this since it is illegal. A crime against the prosecutor himself may be created for obstruction of justice. The chances here are determined by checking a characters INT and oratory and, if he passes the check, no crime is generated. So an intelligent prosecutor with high oratory may very well get away with a lot of destructions before a crime is finally created. Even then the crime will end in his hands if it is prosecuted. The best way of success here is to wait until the next election period and hope that a new prosecutor is elected who might prosecute this case.
What a prosecutor normally does with a file is to look at the suspects and decide whether the clues in the file make one suspect stand out enough to make the jurors believe that he committed the crime. See the crime section for an explanation on clues and suspects. When he selects a crime file he gets a list of suspects and how often each suspect has been identified. When he thinks one suspect stands out, he Declares him Main Suspect with the respective button. Now he can Hand Over this file To the Judge which removes the crime file from his list because it is now with the judges office.
If the prosecutor thinks, however, that there is not enough evidence to declare a main suspect, he might ask, for example, a PC guard to investigate the file further. To do so he would create a copy, hand it to the PC guard and ask him to put more clues into this file. The guard can do so and then just go to a terminal and send the file to the prosecutor's office. The file is then merged with the master file in the prosecutor's office and the new clues are available. Guards will usually get reimbursed for their expenses by the judge.
Once the judge opens the trial, the prosecutor will automatically receive a copy of the file. His task then is to enter a statement into the file on the newly appeared Trial Tab. The tab looks like this:

The prosecutor should enter his statement in the edit control and then click on Send My Statement. He should make his case and declare why the jurors should declare guilt, or perhaps why they should declare not guilty. Sometimes everyone agrees that a crime was committed in error or for other reasons that speak for a non guilty verdict, so the prosecutor can ask for that, or for the opposite. If the prosecutor does not enter his statement before the jurors have voted, then a rumor about him is created stating that he is neglecting his office. This rumor might harm the character later in his social ranking so be sure to submit a statement for every file you are prosecutor in.
If the suspect is convicted, you will receive an XP award later when the judge applies the punishment.
Beware that the Prime Minister, Judges and Prosecutors loose their office and are replaced by the next one on the election list, if they don't log in for 4 days! Don't become an official if you can't invest the time to log in every day and do your duty, or you will be replaced.
