Death

There are two important settings on the character selection dialog that are related to heirs and inheritance.

First on the initial character select screen, where you have your main characters, you chose for everyone of them if you want him to Go To Hell or Use Heir in case he is permakilled, this is the rightmost column named Death Method.

If Go To Hell is selected, your character will not be deleted in case he is killed and will rather become a demon. If Use Heir is selected, then one of the offsprings on the characters heir list is selected. You can chose which one by going to the characters heir list with the Select Offspring button and select one as preferred heir. However, if that student times out because he reaches the age of 30 or is taken as heir by the other parent, he may no longer available at the time of death of your character, therefore you should always keep an eye on your heir list and perhaps select a different preferred heir.

You can also destroy a character here which is not exactly like death because the character will not be followed by an heir nor become a demon, he will simply be erased together with all his belongings! Don't do this if your character owns a house and has co owners. You should always transfer your house to one of your co owners or another character you chose before deleting a character who has partners in the world.

If a character is killed by a NPC guard, his death box goes into his vault!

This prevents malicious players from abusing guards in clever schemes to kill PCs and then loot their death box

Perma death

How is perma death achieved, or in other words how can you make a heir take over or send your character to hell? There are only two ways to do that: Either another character has to take your character on his perma kill list and then kill him, which will cause a murder crime to be generated against him, be careful though, if you decide to perma kill someone and he retaliates, you are automatically added to his perma kill list and should he manage to KO you, it would result in the permadeath of your character, plus the defending character who killed your character will not be accused of murder because he was acting in self defense!

You can go on a quest with a Suicide Death Marker as reward. This is an item that will be dropped in the room when you fulfill the quest and the first quest party member who double-clicks this marker dies permanently. Be careful with Suicide Quests! There is no way to bring your character back once he is dead!

A character who dies permanently has two choices: He can either have an heir take over for him or he can choose to go to hell and continue his existence as a demon. When a heir takes over, he will inherit most of the characters possessions, including a house, the vault content and about 75% of his money. If the character has no heir but had Use Heir selected in the Death Method field on the login screen, then the character will be destroyed and all his belongings will be lost! It is generally better to go to hell in such a case, which is why that option is set for every new character by default. The only exception is, when the character has a house and has handed out shares to other characters. The character with the most shares will then take over the house, if the dead character had no heir. However if the majority shareholder already owns a house, then the house of the dead character is destroyed!

A heir is created when two characters have a child. The skills and abilities of the child are copied from one of the parents randomly.

A character who is a criminal with prison time can not chose the Use Heir method, regardless of whether he is in prison or on the run! such a character will automatically be set to go to hell, even if he has a heir! The reason is to prevent players of criminal characters to erase their character with prison time and so avoid the prison time altogether by having an innocent heir take over the criminal character's belongings.
